about

A song from the mid 1800s about a seaman leaving his “own true love” to sail from England to California. The perilous voyage, which would take him around the treacherous Straits of Magellan, was aboard the ship David Crockett, sailed by the imposing Captain John A. Burgess.

lyrics

Farewell to Princes' landing stage River Mersey fare thee well
I am bound for California, a place I know right well

Chorus:
So fare thee well my own true love
When I return united we will be
It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me
But my darling when I think of thee

I've sailed on a Yankee clipper ship, "Davy Crockett" is her name
And Burgess is the captain of her and they say that she's a floating frame
Chorus...

I have sailed with Burgess once before, I think I know him well
If a man's a seaman he will get along, if not then he's sure in hell
Chorus...

Well the sun is on the harbour love, no more I can remain
For I know it will be a long long time till I see you again
Chorus...

Though we feature some raucous tunes about drinking and fighting, we are really a bunch of happily sober pacifists!
