Fifty Shades of Beer

from Hot Potatoes by The Out of Kilters

/

about

A tragi-comic song by Peter and Tom about a tough choice faced by the band after a three-day festival: consuming a vast quantity of leftover beer, or living to tell the tale.

lyrics

©2015 Peter Rodgers

A sultry Sunday night, now the festival is over
It's been a long auld slog, still I'm proud of stayin' sober
For three delirious days we've been playing like bejaysis
Yellin' from the stage across a field of glowin' faces
Comin' from the Em'rald Isle to this dusty desert city,
Singin' rowdy rebel songs had me feeling dry and gritty
When these bleary Irish eyes, they were met with the allure
Of a sea of shining liquor headed for the nearest sewer

Chorus:
50 Shades of beer sittin' waitin' on the table,
A reassuring voice sayin' "Drink it, if you're able!"
Tell 'em no ("Tell 'em no!")
Let it go-oh
Me drinkin'days are over, I'll be on me merry way

There's a comely lookin' barmaid with a twinkle in her eye
Though the night is only young I have to turn my head and sigh
There'll be work again on Monday now I have to keep it clean
If I give in now I know that I'll be forty shades of green

Chorus:
50 Shades of beer sittin' waitin' on the table,
A reassuring voice sayin' "Drink it, if you're able!"
Tell 'em no ("Tell 'em no!")
Let it go-oh
Me drinkin'days are over, I'll be on me merry way

Bridge:
We'll be a long time dead once into the ground we go,
So send my share of liquor to the spirits down below

Should I take that fateful sip, who's to say how many more
Like the single careless shot that begins a bloody war
Many valiant souls have all battled to the last
Warriors in tartan lying wasted on the grass

Chorus:
50 Shades of beer sittin' waitin' on the table,
An old familiar voice sayin' "Drink it, if you're able!"
Tell 'em no ("Tell 'em no!")
Let it go-oh
Me drinkin'days are over, I'll be on me merry way

50 Shades of beer sittin' waitin' on the table,
I thought I heard a voice sayin' "Drink it, if you're able!"
Tell 'em no ("Tell 'em no!")
Let it go-oh
Me drinkin'days are over, I'll be on me merry way

about

The Out of Kilters Tucson, Arizona

Formed in 2009, we have played everything from the main stages at Tucson’s St Patrick’s Day and Celtic festivals to charity and other events across Arizona and New Mexico. We have three CDs under our belts, Down the Rocky Road, Get Yer Irish Up, and Hot Potatoes.

Though we feature some raucous tunes about drinking and fighting, we are really a bunch of happily sober pacifists!
